The next time you take a cruise ship vacation, don’t be surprised if Kathy Lee Gifford finds her way into your wine glass.
No, Cathy Lee Gifford is not the new cruise director on the love boat, but there’s a good chance you’ll come across her on your next cruise vacation. That’s because the co-host of the Today Show now has her name on a Pinot Noir Rose that will be served aboard Carnival Cruise ships.
Oh, so you didn’t know that Kathie is making wine? Well, the term “making wine” certainly is subject to interpretation. These days, an endless list of actors, musicians, sports stars and other celebrities are finding there way into the world of wine. Let’s face it… celebrity sells. The problem is, there is a big difference between making wine and taking credit for the wine that is made.
While there are certainly a number of celebrity winemakers who truly do spend countless hours in the vineyard and winery, there are many more who simply lend their name to a brand and watch the sales skyrocket regardless of how good or bad the wine may be.
Kathy Lee, who spends a great deal of time seemingly advocating overindulgence, is frequently poked fun at by the likes of Saturday Night Live. And while Gifford’s wines are actually made by Scheid Vineyards in California, anyone who overindulges can safely make the claim “Kathy Lee got me intoxicated.”
