Winemaker: Sterling Kragten
This dark and vivacious Malbec appears every few years as it occupies a bit less than one acre on Cass Winery’s east-side location in the Templeton Gap. Reminiscent of the bright and fruit-forward wines known to the region’s Bordeaux style blends, this unique version also has a deep and lingering backbone thanks to a hint of Petit Sirah. It greets the nose with blackberry, violets and spice and satisfies with a dynamic palate of black cherry with hints of dark cocoa. It is beautifully rounded with tannins that lead to a bring, long finish. It’s both approachable and classic-Bordeaux, with plenty of fruit to balance its hearty body. Pair it over the Holidays with a T-Bone steak or honey-baked ham.
50% Zinfandel / 50% Grenache
Winemaker: Brian Benson
Brian Benson is highly regarded as one of the top young winemakers in Central California and has a cult-like following. His unique style of making ultra-premium wine brings out deep flavors and soft finishes from Rhone varietals. Though the 2013 version of this wine was not professionally rated, Brian Benson’s wines routinely score in the 90s.
100% Estate Grown Grenache Blanc
Winemaker: Bob Tillman
Alta Colina is one of Paso Robles’ most popular boutique wineries. Winemaker Bob Tillman makes soft and approachable wines that consistently score in the 90s. No professional ratings were solicited for the 2016 version of this wine, however it is a truly fantastic white, rich in body, with soft and lingering flavors. This is the white wine for red wine lovers.
100% Estate Zinfandel (Dry Farmed)
Winemaker: Richard Hartenbergber
Midnight Cellars is a consistent producer of high-scoring wines, particularly its Zinfandel and Zinfandel-based blends. This is 100% estate grown Zin, produced by dry farming to accentuate the tannic structure and reduce some of the overripe jammy-ness akin to most Paso Zins. This one is well balanced, with a fruit-forward introduction and an Earthy finish. It’s the ideal Zin to include as it will appeal to everyone, and help breakdown some of the stereotypes about overly fruity Zins.
Winemaker: Edgar Torres
Local favorite Edgar Torres is extremely well-known and regarded in the local wine community, and was mentored by McPrice Myers as Assistant Winemaker at Barrel 27. He was also profiled in Wine Spectator as one of three young Mexican-born influencers in the wine business. The previous year’s wine (2015) was awarded a score of 93 in the December 2017 Wine Enthusiast. The wine also scored a 91 from Jeb Dunnick. We’re fortunate enough to include this exceptional Spanish varietal, as it will draw significant attention from wine lovers in the Hispanic community, and otherwise.
Rose of Grenache (100% Grenache)
Winemaker: Ismael Balderas
Famed winemaker Ismael Balderas gained worldwide recognition when he was awarded 100 points at the 2001 World Wine Competition in France. He’s earned numerous awards at San Marcos Creek, including Best in Show at the notable Central Coast Wine Competition. The 2015 Rose was also awarded the Silver Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. This wine is a great value, and a superb Rose for the holidays.
